What Are Junior Colleges?
Junior colleges are very often referred to as 'jucos' in the United States. A junior college is basically an educational institution where students moving on from high school can enroll in order to pursue higher studies. The junior college involves two years of studies, which includes academic, vocational and professional education as well. Junior college education comes just before the bachelor's degree. The junior college education is also known as the 'non-bachelor's degree'. The best advantage of junior colleges is that the student can get an associates degree, you also earn many credits for other extra-curricular activities. In the event the student wants to join a University later, the credits he earns in junior college can be transferred to his record even at that point. So in that sense, the junior college forms the very basis for all education later. Many junior colleges basically cater to providing education to the members of a local area or community. They are also known as public junior colleges or community colleges. Though there is a slight difference between regular junior colleges and community colleges, they are nowadays generally used to mean the same thing. Contrary to popular thought, only a handful of junior colleges in the US are private junior colleges. Most junior colleges in existence in this country are public junior colleges, also referred to as 'community colleges'. History of Junior colleges The existence of Junior colleges can be traced right back to the 19th Century, in the state of New York. It was during the Chautauqua movement that the first junior colleges emerged. At this time, many academically inclined groups from several acclaimed universities traveled through the length and the breadth of the nation, propagating the need for education among the masses. They set up small courses, lasting for eight to ten weeks, educating students on arts, literature, science and related aspects. This is said to have evolved at a later stage, giving rise to junior colleges as they are today. The atmosphere of a junior college is most pleasurable, since the student, at this stage of his academic life, does not feel pressured and pushed to perform in the field of academics. During his junior college life, he can also enroll in many other side activities such as drama, sports and the like. In case he excels at one or more of these extra-curricular activities, the junior college management gives him the recognition due to him in his field of activity. The junior college student's excellent track record in other activities enables him to establish a favorable record for himself in his future education as well. For instance, he could use these activities to make a formidable name for himself as an athlete in his later university degree education as well. Though junior college education does not count as being very important academics-wise, his life during his junior college years definitely reflects on his later life. Junior college education gives a student a strong foundation, allowing him to gather credits for other activities besides academics.
